100k AA miles sign up bonus!

David's last post described the thought process in choosing the right card(s) to get you that trip you've always wanted. It was thorough, detailed—and let's face it—didn't answer the question you asked in the first place: Which card should you get?

I'll cut to the chase I am telling you exactly which card to sign up for.

Citi just came out with a new offer last week, and this is the card you want! The Citi AAdvantage World Mastercard offers a 100k mile sign-up bonus!

The details for this card are as follows:
  • $450 annual fee not waived for the first year
  • $200 statement credit for the first $200 spend
  • $10,000 minimum spend in 3 months for the bonus
  • 100k bonus after the minimum spend
  • Admirals club lounge membership (including bringing immediate family and one guest)
At first glance, the annual fee of $450 and the minimum spend of $10,000 is a bit steep, but here's why it's a brilliant deal.

$450 annual fee isn't as bad as you think.

The key is the $200 statement credit. That basically takes the annual fee down to $250. That means you are paying $250 for a lounge membership that typically costs $450 a year AND the 100k miles. If you take the awesome lounge membership out of the equation, you are still only paying $250 for 100k miles, or 2 tenths of a cent per mile ($0.002/mile).

Putting this into our friend's terms, you are paying $250 for a round-trip business class from the U.S. to Japan, Korea, or Mongolia. Alternatively you could afford 2 round-trip tickets to the same places in economy to really go the distance with the miles.

$10,000 minimum spend. No worrying necessary.

The $10,000 minimum spend sounds like a lot, but with the help of a few tips on how to meet minimum spend it almost becomes a non-issue. Just use the Bluebird and gift card strategy and you can be finished with the minimum spend in as little as two months.

This is such a great deal that I signed up for this card right away, even though I already signed up for three other cards the previous week. In my situation, I need to achieve a minimum spend of $17,000 in three months to get all four credit card sign-up bonuses.

No sweat.
